NEW YORK TIMES (1)
Paul Breuer and Matt Dawson have worked in the vintage-clothing industry for two decades. Dawson relocated to Kent from London in April last year, drawn, like many Londoners, by the allure of good schools and the notion of a picture-book childhood for his children. “Initially coming here was about the kids, really — fresh air, live by the seaside,” Dawson said. “But now it’s nice to be somewhere vibrant, on the up.” We were standing among the vintage cashmere, brogues and braces of their shop, Breuer & Dawson, in the old quarter of Margate — a knot of winding streets and pleasingly crooked buildings now populated by cupcake cafes, retro furniture stores, a pub that offers a locally sourced menu and an alluringly named tea shop, Lady Tesla’s Loose Leaves and Mud. “Margate went down furthest and came up quickest,” said Breuer, who has lived in Kent with his family for 10 years. “It’s kind of the last area in Britain that’s as close to London as Brighton” — a town in Sussex often referred to as London-by-the-Sea — “but a world away in terms of attitudes.” -

George RW Cutts (5)
Back in February we had the pleasure of meeting an artist by the name of George RW Cutts. His medium is watercolour and ink; the paintings are intricate snapshots of past events, objects, clothing and people. Here at B & D we really admire his vignettes, and since we seem to share similar interests and influences we look forward to seeing more of his work and hope to collaborate in the future. Here is a selection of our favourite pieces including a painting of the shop. Find him here http://archivefrom1980.com -

BIG STAR (6)
In the first of an occasional series, the Musical Heroes of Breuer & Dawson, we focus on the all too short career of Memphis pop maestros Big Star. Formed in 1971 by ex Box Tops singer Alex Chilton, they shone brightly for a brief 3 year period, during which they recorded 2 albums #1 Record & Radio City. A combination of record company fuck ups and alcohol and drugs led to their untimely demise. Their legacy can be seen in a long list of admirers ranging from Cheap Trick to Teenage Fanclub, REM, Wilco, The Replacements, the list goes on. There is a wealth of material to explore... In the words of Alex Chilton " Those records are brilliant in some ways, and they are the gropings of young fools in others" -
MOUNTAIN STORY (60)
"You do not have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things, to compete you can be an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated." Thus spoke Sir Edmund Hillary, world renowned mountain climber and Antarctic explorer on his motivations, desires and inner psyche. What he failed to mention, was that scaling the heights of countless snow covered peaks gave him the chance to stride around with a bunch of like minded chaps in some of the finest collection of knitwear, British Army surplus, and down jackets seen outside of Margate's finest sons, Breuer & Dawson. Before the advent of Gortex, breathable fabrics, whatever, whoever; these hardy souls braved the elements in woolly jumpers, army kit and liberally applied goose grease. This piece is dedicated to their endurance and sheer bloody mindedness. The photos date from the 1940's through to the 1970's and are a brief snapshot of how mountaineering clothing changed through the decades. Concluding with a selection of our finest knitwear and outerwear for you delectation. -

SHUKTARA BLANKETS (19)
"The blankets that David has made exclusively for us are all made from vintage cotton saris. David selected pieces that he thought would work for our store, using blues and reds and some bold floral designs. Each blanket is 6 layers of cotton and hand stitched with cotton thread. David has been working with a group of women, who live in a village outside Calcutta, for the last 6 years and this work has not only improved their lives but enabled many of them to send their children to school and gain a certain amount of financial independence. 10 percent from the sales of these blankets goes back to David's charity shuktara. (www.shuktara.net) Wash your blanket at 30 degrees, hang it on the line and tumble dry it for best results". -

Finds from the Breuer & Dawson 2012 European tour “Turn Ups to 11” (2)
We left no stone unturned, no barn door unopened, no Sailor fully clothed. First up from a barn on the French Belgian border is this 1930’s English motorcycle coat made by Mascot how it ended up there is a mystery fit for Holmes. Despite enemy fire, with the help of the little ships of Ramsgate harbour we managed to successfully return the coat to its rightful home. An amazing coat still strong. One of a kind. -
